Digital Marketing Fall 2008

I deserve an A for my work this quarter. I was late on my cell phone video, and one of my videos went past the set time requirement.

I have been relentless in immersing myself into the plethora of social media platforms and have taken advantage of almost every opportunity given me.

I think my first Axe commercial should not be held against my grade. Sure I may have missed the mark, but I took a risk and went for it!

Video hit List

Priceless - 5,524

Political - 1,735

Animated - 1,309

Oreo - 2,626

Axe - 385

Cell - 482

total hits - 12,016

December 16, 2008

Well these last 11 weeks I have learned a lot. I have seen firsthand the importance of living my blog and the Live Web. Using information learned through Kotler and combining them with Shiffman's expertise in the modern digital age, I have learned how to promote my productions and myself through an unlimited amount of social media platforms.

On a personal note I think I am still looking for my style. Not all my videos are great, some have potential, some are a wash, but I have learned from each one of them. The one thing I can truly say is that I have learned and am still learning how to maximize my viewership.

I know for a fact that we are all living in awesome times. The versatility of emerging digital technology that is out right now has never been seen by generations before. And even newer and better things are on the horizon. As a young indie filmmaker I must learn how to use these tools and be able to adapt to them. This will give me a crucial edge in a highly competitive world.

I highly recommend to all Denise Shiffman’s book The Age of Engage. This book is full of priceless and invaluable information regarding marketing and developing a brand identity through the modern digital age and social media forums.

SWOT
Strengths
– Punctuality, enthusiasm, class involvement, willing to learn, and the ability to take criticism. I have also shown an understanding of digital marketing.

“ We need to think of the Web as alive, as an ecosystem with a heartbeat that is constantly moving and changing in order to create engaging, interactive marketing, and valuable business interactions at each touch point. The result for marketers is the ability to create, influence, and participate in the conversations that make up markets.” Denise Shiffman – Age of Engage chap.1 pg.3

Weaknesses - I need to work on thinking outside the box and to go deeper in my works. I need to create video content that people want to watch ( and not just what I want too).

“By the 1980’s we could see the flaws in mass marketing, the dollar wasted in chasing people who weren’t interested in the message.” Denise Shiffman - Age of Engage Chap. 1 pg 8

“Smart marketers are going to find the age of engage a good time to be in marketing. The authentic, on-target, timely message will enable successful products on a broader scale than in the past. Taking advantage of the efficiencies of the Web, more products will have the opportunity to attract consumers, or easily be found by them. Products that meet a real market need, offered by even the smallest companies, can find an audience, and experience exceptional growth through top-of-page organic search results or through word-of-mouth. Denise Shiffman - Age of Engage chap.1 pgs. 9-10

Opportunities – Through this class I have taking advantage of many things that I did not know, but do now. Since week 1 of Digital Marketing, I have gone on to join these groups; Nevada Film Alliance, Los Angeles Final Cut Users Group, Fest 21, CES.

I have also become registered with social media platforms; Twitter, Vimeo, College Humor, Digg, Facebook, Blogger. To promote my videos I have joined groups such as OMG (yahoo entertainment), GOP, CBN, and have also started reading The Wall Street Journal online.

“There is a vast array of online marketing vehicles to choose from including your Web site, email campaigns, paid search, banner ads, search engine optimization, widgets, video, and word-of-mouth campaigns. Online includes marketing to cellphone users and inside virtual worlds, as well as how you incorporate Live Web technologies including tagging , voting, RSS, wikis, blogs, podcasts, and more." Denise Shiffman – Age of Engage chap.7 pg 151-152

Threats – Procrastination, afraid to take risks, not staying abreast of new technology, unwilling to adapt or learn, not paying attention to details.

“Trying at least one new thing each week will propel your creative energy. Marketing is now steeped in technology, which requires marketers get comfortable with everything digital and build a deeper understanding of new and advanced technologies on the Web.”

“You should be the first person to bring these new technologies in-house. There are vast opportunities that will be uncovered when you open the door for others to comment on or edit your ideas.” Denise Shiffman chap.8 pg. 186

5k HITS!!! Go Warhammer, it's your birthday... gonna party like it's your birthday!

re-post of this soon to be classic, pc gamer phenomenon!!!

I made this video with a target audience in mind, Gamers. Gamers of all consoles from X-Box to Pc's, are a loyal group whose frenzy for what they love is unmatched. In the Book Age of Engage, author Denise Shiffman goes in depth on how much the Live Web and the Digital Social Media has changed marketing in our ever changing world. Gamers are one group whom sit on top of this digital pantheon, always looking for the latest piece of hardware that will fuel their digital desires.

This just doesn't concern pc equipment, but encompasses the whole gauntlet of media gadgets. Cell phones, non-terrestrial radio, GPS, Blu-Ray, HD televisions, cameras, are just many of the things that have advanced in the modern digital age. And well gamers, they must have it all.

Gamers, nerds, losers, or whatever you want to call them (me), are already looking for the next best digital thing that is on the horizon, while everyone else is just finally tapping into it.

Marketing since last tuesday.

This week I finished my cell phone video and have posted it throughout my various media outlets.
Everywhere from myspace to digg, I pushed my vids. I have blogged and posted bulletins, I even used the tried and true form of word of mouth.

The one video that really has spiked in hits this week was my "Priceless" video. I went to some popular PC gaming sites such as IGN.com and other MMORPG forums to create a buzz with gamers. I embellished somewhat by changing the videos title, insinuating a near expansion of the newly created game. With over 5 k hits and throwing it out there on the living web I think my ploy has worked.

My political and animation vids have not fared well, but my Oreo vid, though it has trailed off somewhat is still getting decent hits.

Tomorrow I will be re-shooting my Axe commercial. I finally have been able to secure my actors.

New CellPhone video RELEASED!!!

my Axe video has been removed from AILV ENGAGE

I've since been informed that my Axe Commercial video did not meet the requirements needed.
I still have it posted on Youtube.com without the AILV logo. But I will have to produce a new Axe commercial. That's fine.

I personally think that it does meet the requirements for television, have you seen what is on the tube these days. I have seen worse on reality TV and among programs.

I will say that if its not appropriate for the American audience, I propose a different angle. It definatley could be shown in Europe. From the last discussion we hand on male hygeine. It wouldn't be far fetched for Axe to enter the Euro market and use a commercial like mine. I am not bitter or resentful, it's been a good learning experience. I don't consider I failed in my endeavor and that I offended anyone, I think that's awesome.

I received my Masters Program book from the Art Academy of SanFrancisco a few months back and I happened upon flipping through it this last week. One of the main quotes from their book was "if your art doesn't offend, than it's not art."

I will keep that in mind as I express myself now and in my future. Now I'm off to make a new video. /cheers

Axe - It feels so good...

Just finshed shooting my video this afternoon with some good friends. I think it's very funny with a twist not usually found with Axe commercials... no women, just a man and his AXE!!!

I will edit on monday, it should be posted on Youtube later that evening.

MY OREO VIDEO JUST BROKE 1,000 HITS!!!!!!

Living the live web is paying off, I have posted on Forbes, Yahoo OMG, and Yahoo's feature entertainment on the world's sexiest man. I posted to those places to create a vibe that would increase my hits!

I posted a comment on Forbes (motrin ad)

you can find it there right now (google the motrin ad link)

I am appalled by the lack of sensitivety displayed by Motrin's shameful ad towards women (especially mothers). I found another ad that was even more exploitive and ire invoking. You think Motrin's was bad, check this one out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzjgBC_gQ5g

Pre-Production Oreo Video

Well atm I am going through my checklist for everything I require for my video which I will start shooting at 1-1:30pm. I am using a friends apartment with about 4 cast members and myself as the sole crewmember. I am using a DVX-100 video camera, Lowell Lights and tripod.

I decided on not using any special audio equipment as I will narrate over the video in post. The video shoot should take me no more then 2 hours to set up and shoot. I know this will be my best video yet as the inhibitions have come off and I will strive for a worthy piece of entertainment. SEX, COMEDY, and VIOLENCE! Having 2 out of 3 will be a great place to start!

I'll update progress after the shoot.

OREO VIDEO

New Pitch for week 7 Oreo Video

In an apartment a few guys and girls are partying and devouring tequila shots. Main guy breaks out oreos and sprinkles cookie bits onto girls chest. He licks the cookie bits, pops a cookie into his mouth then does a body shot of milk from the girls cleavage. Oreos, milk and chicks, formula for fun.

GOP and CBN

I have joined both the Official Republican website and the Christian Broadcast News sites in order to spread my videos around. The GOP is giving me problems trying to login atm from a school, I look forward to posting there. CBN (700 Club) doesn't seem to have a forum room for members to post but only to send comments to the CBN people directly( bummer).

On another note I have already worked on 2 different videos for my animation and I may be doing one with Ed Brigman later this week. He accepted my idea, I am just not sure yet if I want to go that route.

“Once you have unique value, you must then have the tenacity, vigor, and belligerence to make it successful.”
Age of Engage – Denise Shiffman chap.3 pg.75

When you think you have achieved success, it’s not enough to just have achieved it, but to maintain it. You must have the competence and drive and be relentless with building upon the success you have created. Don’t get comfortable, keep moving to get better and better, there is always someone behind you with a new and better way just trying to overtake you.

Promoting my new video

There have been may ways I have gone about promoting my videos; I have created accounts on vimeo, digg, youtube, myspace and this blogspot. I also send out alert bulletins throughtout those sites as well notifying my friends list. Cross referencing between my sites has created a huse network for myself where I can promote my videos easier. I can also make changes more efficiently as I go. I have even called friends via my cell phone and sent out emails. There are more things I need to do, my first video tells me that due to the results of the hits it has garnered.

At the top by myself... just the way I like it.

“The reason why young companies have an advantage is because one person, or a small group, is forced to do all of these things, thereby tightening the integration between each area. It is easier for employees in small companies to have the same goal, and it’s clear everyone wins if the goal is met.”
Age of Engage – Denise Shiffman Chap.2 pg. 31

The wonderful thing about having my own company and being the only employee is that I have the freedom to do anything I want too. I follow my own ideas and act accordingly; I can gather information all by myself from the web and get feedback from the actual people that are viewing my videos.

Warhammer Video - The Process

"In this age, managing your brand means understanding your audience's worldview, one that is greatly defined by the online neighborhoods and meeting places they choose to visit."
Age of Engage - Denise Shiffman chap.6 pg.133

I truly worked under the time restrictions outlined. I made this video with edits under an hour and 30 minutes. I feel the sloppiness came out because of this. I will endeavor to do a better job next time regardless of guidelines.

I had fun for sure, I enjoyed working by myself. I also realized what days and times would be the most beneficial to undertake my projects. Let's see what did I learn? Definitely be very sure of your equipment, what you need and where. Be clear on your plan of execution and be ready to change things on the fly. Things will occur to create obstacles for you. You may have an actor flake out on you or your place of filming needs to be changed. Just be ready to roll with it and get the work done.

Fundamental Marketing; Does it have a place in the modern digital age?

"It's true, marketing has gone through dramatic change, but let's not throw out the bath with the bathwater. The most fundamental marketing concepts still hold true. There must be a unique value tied to your product if it is going to rise to the top and get noticed-but product value isn't static. We need to know how to reinvent value and ingrain that in our processes."

-The Age of Engage Deinise Shiffman chap.1 pg. 12-13

Learning marketing methods of Armstrong and Kotler I know they cannot be dismissed; though in this everchanging age of media one must be ready to adapt on the fly. If one was to lag behind just a bit, they might not ever be able to catch up. Using the tried and true methods of Kotler and blending them with new able ideas, todays marketer should be ready with whatever obstacle they may encounter.

Age of Engage chap 1 pg 3 – Denise Shiffman

This is such an absolute statement living in this ever changing interactive, digital age. The Web is the world now. The days of snail mail that I witnessed as a young kid is now ancient. With the advent of Youtube, Myspace, Vimeo and countless others that spring up daily if not hourly, communication, self promotion, product marketing, awareness and countless other worldly subjects or not so, is in a constant evolution. Those who shy from it will find themselves shut out, only those who are willing to embrace it will reap any rewards. We who are here now are in the midst of this epic storm sweeping our world. When I see it coming I will not be running from it, rather towards.
